Our Graduate program is designed to improve pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students who are seeking to complete their legal admission requirements and establish a career within the social justice and community sector.

With two positions available, we invite law graduates and students who are eligible but yet to undertake Practical Legal Training (PLT). During this program, graduates are employed on a full-time basis and placed within teams where you will divide your time between on the job learning and undertaking PLT through Leo Cussen Centre for Law. You will receive a full-time salary and VLA will cover your PLT course fees with three days of your week fully devoted to PLT studies. The remaining two days will focus on practical tasks, skills development and other on the job learning and shadowing.

You will gain training, supervision and mentoring from expert lawyers, connect with various leaders across VLA and be engaged with substantive legal work. As well as receiving broad exposure to the work of VLA and diverse career offerings, you will also be supported with PLT coursework. This program is also an ideal pathway into our New Lawyers Program (NLP), with participants in the graduate program being guaranteed an interview for the 2022 NLP intake. Program participants will also be well placed to take up other varied and diverse legal roles within VLA at the completion of the program.

About you:
We are seeking community minded candidates who embody our values of fairness, care and courage and seeking a career in social justice and human rights. You will enjoy working as part of a team, actively seek out development opportunities and possess the time management skills necessary to meet the requirements of your PLT course work and practical training requirements.

VLA considers that being an Aboriginal and/or a Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under the Section 12 Special Measures of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

To be accepted on the program you must be eligible to commence your PLT in January 2022.

How to apply:
Please submit a current resume and completed candidate application form. You must complete the candidate application form to be considered for this role, separate responses to the KSC outlined in the position description are not required.

Please provide information that supports your identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person (this might be a Confirmation of Aboriginality document or letter from an Aboriginal community controlled organisation where you are from, where you have studied or where you now live). Please contact us if this is a challenge and we can work with you on an alternative.
