Job Summary

The Technical Specialist will provide technical expertise and pro-active management of the Australian Defence Satellite Communications Capability (ADSCC), Off-Shore Anchor Stations (OSA), Interim Anchor Stations (IAS) and other Wide Band Ground Terminals via Surveillance, Analysis, Routine Maintenance and Service Restoration tasks whilst providing in depth technical support, training and shift supervision as part of the ADFSOC management team. The Technical Specialist will also be required to perform the function of Shift Leader as indicated in the shift roster, when requested. Further to this the Technical Specialist is responsible for reporting and trending problems to identify any network issues that arise. Assist the Group Leader and DSCC manager in all areas of their duties while pro-actively promoting all the Optus Values in day to day activities.

The Technical Specialist will also provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for all ADFSOC networks and operating systems. A broad range of technical expertise gained from working in the industry will be required to cover the various and complex technologies, platforms and subsystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that Contracted Availability Targets for Wide Band Services are met
  • Manage and be the SME for the maintenance, operation and continued development of the Defence Satellite TDMA systems.
  • Pro-actively promote all local and Optus OH&S procedures to ensure the team operates in a safe work environment.
  • Proactive management of ADFSOC Network through alarm analysis, trending and liaison with appropriate Engineering groups and Vendors to ensure satisfactory resolution of technical problems.
  • Provide timely advice to Group Leader and ADSCC Manager of any problems or potential problems that could be hazardous to personnel, current contracts and the ADFSOC.
  • Establish and maintain quality working relationships will all customers, Optus Tier 2 Support, Engineering, Vendors & Customer Service, ensuring appropriate action is taken to maximise ADFSOC availability, quality and maintain network integrity.
  • Monitor the supervision of permit to works on the ADFSOC.
  • Completion of special projects and assignments as require, including the maintenance and continuous upgrade of the tools and procedures provided to support ADFSOC operations and particularly information technology tools.
Experience and Qualifications
  • Appropriate Certificate, Diploma or Degree in electronic engineering or telecommunications.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the operation, maintenance & technical analysis of ADFSOC networks and associated equipment or a civilian equivalent.
  • Crisis Management and Business Recovery skills specific to the ADFSOC Networks
  • Ability to supervise staff including organising, prioritising and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to plan, organise and manage own work
  • Ability to plan, organise and co-ordinate the work of others
  • High level of computer skills
  • Proven ability to deliver complex failure management and resolution
  • High level of Unix, network and IT failure analysis skills
  • Proven interpersonal skills in a relevant technical environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
