JOB DESCRIPTION
- Autonomous role with varied duties
- Machinery operation and infrastructure maintenance-focused!
About the Company
Our client is a large-scale family-run farm situated in the Derwent Valley, approximately 100 kilometres from Hobart. Established in 1936, the operation spans 8,400 hectares of country, sustaining a herd of 2000 cattle, 7000 sheep and 500 goats. The property receives 800mm of rainfall annually, providing an excellent opportunity to maximise year-round feed availability through pasture performance and the production of hay. In addition, the property includes native forests, and hard and softwood plantations as a value-added enterprise.
About the Role
Reporting to the property owner, this role focusses on the operation of seasonal tasks involved with pasture management and the production of hay, such as seeding, spraying, spreading and bailing. In addition, the Farm Maintenance Manager will be responsible for all repairs and maintenance on farm including fences, yards, water infrastructure, and plant and machinery. As required, the Farm Maintenance Manager is supported by farm workers to undertake key tasks.
Duties
- Preventative and reactive plant and machinery maintenance
- Machinery operations (fodder production, pasture renovation, and earth moving)
- Pasture monitoring and weed management
- Maintenance of farm infrastructure
- Welding and general repairs
Skills and Experience
Applications are sought from candidates with a background in hands-on work in agriculture. You should have experience in fencing and general maintenance duties, along with experience in operating a wide range of machinery and undertaking seasonal tasks. You should be confident in troubleshooting and repairing machinery with the ability to weld (ARC or oxy). This is an independent role and will suit a candidate who is willing to work autonomously and use a high level of initiative. An unrestricted car license and ChemCert are essential, and first aid training and an HR license are desirable.
Culture
As an established family-owned business, the family has focussed on making their enterprise a safe and enjoyable place to work. With an open and approachable
management style, the owner sets clear expectations but also provides staff with autonomy and responsibility. Regular toolbox meetings ensure that clear messages are provided and WHS matters are raised and addressed.
Duties are shared around a small team of employees with a Livestock Manager employed to focus on livestock operations. Two farm workers are deployed between the Livestock Manager and Farm Maintenance Manager as required, providing adequate support to both facets of the business.
Salary and Benefits
This position attracts an attractive salary package, commensurate with experience. In addition, the Farm Maintenance Manager will be provided with an updated 3-bedroom home, a generous meat allowance and vehicle for work use.
