JOB DESCRIPTION

The Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) is the independent regulator of the legal profession in Victoria. We are responsible for the granting of licences to, and investigating and acting on complaints about, the conduct of lawyers. As a modern regulator, we focus on behaviour that causes the greatest harm to the community. We try to prevent or mitigate this, including by educating lawyers in compliance and harm reduction, and improving the public’s understanding of the legal sector to help ensure all Victorians have access to effective and high-quality justice. About the Position

This position is responsible for receiving and assessing enquiries from consumers and lawyers, and effectively triaging the enquiries so that they are appropriately resolved or referred for handling within the Division. It has regular contact with internal and external stakeholders including other managers and Division staff, members of the public, complainants, lawyers, law firms and professional associations.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Case manage second tier consumer and lawyer enquiries and complaints referrals received by senior Enquiries & Review staff. This includes analysis of relevant policy, law and legislative guidelines to determine appropriate action for resolving matters or referring as appropriate to the Complaints & Resolutions or Investigations teams
  • Conduct preliminary assessments of new complaints, accurately assessing the issues and the possible application of Uniform Law, obtaining necessary information to develop options to resolve or resolve issues as appropriate
  • Provide guidance and specialist concepts and policies to lawyers and law practices on complex matters relating to registrations, practising certificates, and statutory deposit accounts, based on VLSBC's policies, procedures, guidelines and relevant legislation
  • Provide specialist guidance and advice to Enquiries & Review team in making recommendations for further action based on VLSBC's policies, procedures, guidelines and relevant legislation

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in law will be highly regarded but not essential
