The Role

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lawyer to join IAG's Legal and Company Secretariat in Sydney or Melbourne on a permanent basis. As a Lawyer - Disputes, Regulatory Engagement & Investigations, you will be responsible for managing and providing advice to IAG in relation to significant disputes and regulatory matters. You will be a member of the motivated and high performing IAG Legal and Company Secretariat (LCS) team, which reports to the Group General Counsel and Company Secretary.

To be successful, it will be critical that you have proven experience in Disputes, Regulatory engagement & Investigations. You will ideally have participated in an inhouse secondment showcasing your expertise as this position will require you to deliver high quality legal services, establishing deep and effective relationships with business customers and senior stakeholders and contributing to a highly effective, collegiate and customer focussed in-house legal team in a leading ASX-listed financial institution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing and providing legal advice to IAG in relation to significant disputes and litigation, and in relation significant regulatory matters involving key regulators including ASIC, APRA, ACCC and SIRA.
  • Establishing deep and effective relationships with business partners and senior stakeholders to understand their business drivers and strategic priorities.
  • Delivering high quality legal services, including strategic and commercially focussed legal advice, in a timely manner to various stakeholders within the business.
  • Effectively instructing and managing external counsel in the conduct of significant regulatory and disputed matters.
  • Monitoring legislative/regulatory changes and providing advice to IAG to proactively identify issues which may impact regulatory compliance, strategy, operational issues or business processes.
  • Project managing all legal aspects of new projects and initiatives as required and driving results by meeting the objectives of the IAG Legal team and those of our business partners.
  • Contributing to building and sustaining a high performance and collaborative culture within the IAG LCS team.
  • Contributing to maintaining an appropriate robust level of governance and risk management to manage legal risks.
  • Performing your role consistently with your duty to the court and the administration of justice and deliver legal services objectively, competently, and diligently, as set out in the Legal Profession Uniform Law Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules 2015

Skills & Experience

  • Legal practice experience > 3 years PQE gained at a major law firm, with prior experience in an in-house legal team (including through secondments) strongly preferred.
  • Highly developed legal skills (e.g. written and oral communication, advisory, drafting, negotiation)
  • Excellent stakeholder and project management skills with the ability to proactively provide strategic and customer centric solutions
  • Ability to triage multiple priorities, influence others and work both autonomously and as a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Strong commercial skills and commercial negotiation skills
  • Technology and operations aware
