CSIRO Land and Water is seeking an experienced Field Instrumentation Specialist to join the Material Fluxes Team. The team quantify changes in water, soil, nutrients and vegetation to evaluate the influence of land management on the environment and the cost effectiveness of modifying management practices.

In this diverse role, you will provide technical and programming expertise to the team focussing on the development, deployment and maintenance of automated field and laboratory-based measurement systems to support the scientific research projects in terrestrial, freshwater and marine settings. In addition, you will also undertake the testing and calibration of the environmental sensors and measurement systems to ensure the data provided is high quality and reliable.

Your duties will include:

  • Participating in planning projects and accepting responsibility for scheduling and completion of major parts of the project, including evaluation of options, experimental design, data collection and analysis, user and customer research, user experience and/or software design, implementation and delivery.
  • Developing, deploying and maintaining automated field and laboratory-based measurement systems suited to the needs of scientific research projects.
  • Undertaking field installations of scientific equipment in a range of environments.
  • Programming, testing and calibrating environmental sensors and measurement systems using standard or adapted experimental methods to provide reliable, high quality measurement data.
  • Maintaining detailed, accurate records of field and laboratory operations to support complex technical and scientific investigations.

Location: Townsville, QLD

Salary: AU$83k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent relevant work experience in environmental science or engineering.
  • Extensive experience programming and deploying environmental sensors, data recording systems and field sampling methodologies.
  • The ability to develop and apply experimental procedures for laboratory and field-based operations.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment or independently and to allocate resources and tasks to achieve project goals.
  • To be willing and able to travel domestically and undertake fieldwork.
  • A current driver's licence.
