Summary of Position

The Dental Laboratory Manager at Sunshine Dental lab oversees all functions of the assigned Laboratory.

The Manager’s responsibilities will include both technical and supervisory duties, such as the responsibility for the training and development of all laboratory technicians at the lab as well as the implementation of new products and technologies.

The Manager will be expected to communicate regularly with the owners and take an active role within the planning and management of the business.

The Manager will use their advanced technical skills to construct sophisticated crown & Bridge and implant-based dental prosthetics to exacting standards for fit and aesthetics and use critical thinking to develop and share complex solutions with the team members. While work methods follow established procedures and practices, candidates are expected to consult with their clinicians and team using a high degree of judgment on a patient-by-patient basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep up to date with all the new rules & regulations imposed by Australian Dental Board and implement them in the laboratory processes.
  • Lead and supervise the team of dental technicians and other personnel.
  • Teaching and training of dental technicians, within their existing tasks as well as for the implementation of new products and techniques.
  • Communicate with Dentists regarding cases and case planning
  • Oversee the receiving and entering of all laboratory work and accompanying materials including impressions, scans, models and components.
  • Proficient with the manufacturing of all dental restorations from crown & bridge, implants and fitting of all aspects of full-arch dental prosthetics including accurate manufacturing and articulation of implant models, setting of denture teeth, denture processing and all related components and processes.
  • Manufacturing of all ceramic restorations: metal ceramics, metal free ceramics, ceramic on implants.
  • Cosmetic ceramist from single crowns and veneers to full make-overs.
  • Utilize pressed ceramic systems to fabricate high strength glass dental restorations.
  • Design, manually wax, cast, trim and solder if necessary and finish metal substructures for the fabrication of porcelain bonded to metal crown and use layering porcelain techniques to complete restorations.
  • All aspects of analogue crown and bridge fabrication from morphological wax design, casting production methods, incorporation of precision and semi precision attachments and application of veneering ceramic.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of implant components from Straumann, Southern, Neos .MIS and Nobel implants
  • Plan and order the right components for each individual case
  • Design and fabrication of metal, acrylic polymer and high strength ceramic partial and complete-arch fixed and removable dental implant-supported prostheses.
  • Design and fabrication of metal and acrylic polymer partial and complete removable denture prostheses.
  • Liaise closely with Specialist Prosthodontists, Dental Technicians and Dentists to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes for complex patient cases to a standard required in Specialist Prosthodontic Practice.
  • Apply conventional acrylic polymer or thermoforming technology to fabricate a range of dental appliances.
  • Design and manufacture of Dental Occlusal Splints using CAD Cam software or conventional polymer liquid and powder techniques
  • Design and manufacture custom sports mouth guards
  • Casting and Trimming of Orthodontic Study models and using Face Bow records to mount models on a semi Adjustable articulator
  • Application of aesthetic dentistry principles and digital smile design concepts from single tooth restorations to full-mouth reconstructions.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM technology in the design and fabrication of polymer, metal and ceramic monolithic and veneered crown and bridge prostheses.
  • Utilize digital clinical photography to record and transfer aesthetic records between clinic and laboratory.
  • Receive patients at the lab for custom shade taking & colour matching for difficult cases.
  • Responsible for the accurate organisation of workflow for on time production and delivery of the prosthetics within a patient-driven schedule.
  • Ensure that a quality control process is implemented accurately.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and record fractured or broken prosthesis.
  • Constructs and repairs dentures and other dental appliances
  • Construct and monitor a schedule for equipment, instruments and facility maintenance.
  • Must have knowledge of basic laboratory equipment eg plaster traps, vacuum units, compressors, furnaces, milling machines, hand motors and air con units used as these get cleaned, serviced and maintained by the manager/technician
  • Operate computers and specialised CAD-CAM dental laboratory specific design applications as well as standard office type applications such as web browsers, word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Responsible for all laboratory related supplies and ordering through phone and/or computer-based purchase order systems.
  • Maintain only the highest degree of professionalism and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • communicate regularly with the owners and take an active role within the planning and management of the business.
  • Participate in leadership meetings, process Development and Strategic growth of Sunshine Dental Laboratory with owners
  • Create Growth and Manage Gross Profits
  • Position Requirements
  • A minimum of ten years of hands-on technical experience with at least two years serving in a technical supervision or management capacity.
  • Excellent communication skills with a high command of English language.
  • Be proficient in all aspects of crown and bridge fabrication from morphological wax design, casting production methods, incorporation of precision and semi-precision attachments, through to complete digital workflow.
  • Have experience in full-mouth crown and bridge reconstructions and complete-arch fixed and removable dental implant prostheses.
  • Have experience with restorations of single and multiple anterior, posterior teeth and various different dental implants, be familiar with Vita VM13 and VM9 ceramic materials and build up techniques.
  • Have routinely used zirconia and pressed ceramic systems.
  • Have a fundamental working knowledge of CAD / CAM technology.
  • Be familiar with smile design concepts and all aspects of aesthetic dentistry.
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical and artistic flair in producing work of the standard required in Specialist Prosthodontic and Dental practice also have a good eye for detail.
  • Have attention to detail and be passionate about their work.
  • Be able to work as part of a team in close collaboration with other Dental Technicians and Prosthodontists.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional education.
  • Experience in photography and interacting directly with patients would be an advantage.

Salary: $75,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year
