TransAlta Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian-based TransAlta Corporation, currently operates and maintains 6 power stations in Western Australia. With a 20-year history in the State, we provide safe, clean and reliable power to large mining and industrial customers.

Based on recent customer developments, we are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Project Development Manager to assist with an immediate pipeline of renewable energy projects and to further develop renewable energy opportunities. Reporting to the Manager, Business Development, the Project Development Manager position is a key member of the business development team with an accountability to evaluate and support the development and execution of greenfield, brownfield and M&A clean energy investment opportunities in Australia. 

The role fosters a customer driven growth program that ensures TransAlta is uniquely and competitively positioned to win new growth opportunities. This involves maintaining strong relationships with key customers and stakeholders, developing a deep understanding of our customers’ energy, operational and ESG requirements and understanding the changing market fundamentals in target markets.


  • Supporting the evaluation, development, and execution of potential investment opportunities in alignment with the company’s strategic and financial objectives. This will include:
    • engaging with cross functional teams responsible for all aspects of advancing new opportunities through TransAlta’s Project Development Lifecycle, ahead of a Final Investment Decision;
    • providing due diligence for potential opportunities and acquisitions, including review of technical risks, operational and performance data;
    • communicating status, timelines and risks of opportunities to all involved stakeholders (both internal and external);
    • identifying and mitigating enterprise risk as they relate to the opportunity under development; and
    • preparing project strategies, bid proposals and investment recommendations for presentation to Senior Management.
  • Recommending potential sites for future greenfield developments, including the consideration of permitting and land / stakeholder constraints and the provision of support for permitting and regulatory planning activities, including engaging municipalities, researching applicable legislation and providing required inputs and documentation.
  • Assisting with power supply contracting strategies and to support contract negotiations.
  • Providing project support to the project execution and implementation team on a project by project basis.
  • Maintaining and continuously monitoring power market fundamental characteristics in target markets and technological, environmental, and social changes that impact the ownership and development of clean energy generation facilities.
  • Assisting the Manager, Business Development with comprehensive research designed to support the development and maintenance of the corporate growth strategy, develop customer proposals and to perform competitor analysis.
  • Providing team members with mentorship to support professional growth and make meaningful contributions to the Business Development team.


  • Degree in Commerce, Engineering or Economics; PMP designation or equivalent experience desirable.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of project management or development experience, having worked on renewable energy generation projects.
  • Well-developed understanding of industry guidelines and trends in industry.
  • Ability to coordinate outside a direct span of control or business unit.
  • Knowledge of commodity markets and market fundamental factors in the regions of focus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required for presentations, reports, and proposal writing. This includes the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons.
  • Demonstrated capability to drive innovation and continuous improvement including applying a business analysis approach to accelerate the business unit.
  • Renewable generation modelling or performance analysis skills desirable.
