The Technical Office is a mission-critical team that spans Geoscience, Maintenance and Engineering, Projects, Technology, Exploration, and Performance and Improvement including the roll out of the BHP Operating System. Job Description

Reporting into the Vice President, Metals Exploration – the regionally focused Head of Metals Exploration will communicate and align the Mineral Exploration (MEX) vision, strategy, business requirements and KPI´s within the Region and align all regional exploration activities with the countries of operation. They will provide assurance to the VP, Metals Exploration, that activities in the Region are being carried out, delivered and aligned with the “Way We Discover” management system. This leader is accountable for from the full project pipeline from early stage reconnaissance through to Asset Handover or divestment, as defined by the Vice President, Metals Exploration. She/he leads a dedicated generative team focused on identifying new search spaces, as well as leading the Exploration Managers in each country in the execution of our programs. They will prepare and manage resources (budgets, personnel) to support the discovery of minerals opportunities within the Region. They will ensure compliance and management of projects in accordance with BHPs overall global strategy and standards, as well as ensuring strict adherence to all operational, environmental, legal, financial and social standards, practices and requirements.

Finally, the role forms part of the strategic leadership team for Metals Exploration, and the incumbent will be a proactive, positive contributor to thought leadership

This is a global search with the role to be based from the corporate offices in either Adelaide, SA or Perth, WA - Australia

About You

You will have a depth of integrated technical understanding, particularly in the area of Exploration Geology, although may not be a geologist. You will be a forward-thinking leader with a strong focus on safety, inclusion and diversity, productivity and maximizing the benefit of technology.

Skills And Other Qualifications

Minimum requirements that this candidate will bring are:

  • Tertiary and Post-graduate qualifications, such as an MBA or technical advanced degree in Geology or Earth Science, is required
  • 20+ years of experience managing complex projects and/or risk and business analysis
  • Experience in working in diverse geographical areas / cultures is highly desirable
  • Deep understanding of greenfield discovery exploration value drivers and strategies for commodities and geographies relevant to approved Focus Areas
  • Sound judgement, balancing technical, commercial, operational and risk elements using incomplete and/or ambiguous information


Your Accountabilities Will Include, And Not Be Limited To

Opportunity Selection
  • Assure the region builds and maintains regional geoscience capability by high quality and accessible datasets, prospectivity maps, opportunity identification and regional generative reconnaissance programs
  • Collaborate with Head of Geoscience and Head of Commercial to identify, provide the technical merit justification for the capture of ground (through partnership or 100% BHP) capable of hosting a discovery of interest to BHP and endorses such activity

Portfolio Management
  • Accountable for in-region generative activities, project specific exploration as well as 3rd party activities; acquiring and maintaining title; and for designing, planning and safely executing work programs on regional Greenfields programs
  • Provide input and guidance on regional exploration programs and program designs as well as tenement acquisition proposals
  • Participate in annual project ranking for the Region, including assessment of prospectivity and expected value
  • Contribute to the development of an appropriate portfolio of high-quality self-generated discovery opportunities, aligned with Metals Exploration strategy and Minimum Resource Threshold criteria

Accountabilities (cont.)

People Management
  • Participate fully in the Metals Exploration Leadership Team
  • Manage a team of technical and operations specialists, including professional development, mentoring, and coaching to ensure that the succession pipeline is robust
  • Coach leaders to build strong and inclusive working relationships within MEX regional teams and across functional boundaries

Execution and Stakeholder engagement
  • Design and implementation of programs across the Region
  • Lead the 2-year and participate in the 5-year planning process for Metals Exploration
  • Tracking and reporting on regional exploration trends and opportunities within the Region
  • Ensure that regional exploration and operating capacity and capability are aligned to strategy and plans
  • Demonstrate deep political savvy for identifying strategic stakeholders and establishing tactics for shaping influence. Accountable for the design and monitoring of Regional level Stakeholder Engagement Plans and building Social Value across the Region
  • Anticipate future trends and create multiple plausible scenarios that support the strategic planning process
  • Build connections and trust within various leadership teams to support organizational objectives
  • Participate and contributes to regional associations to ensure interest of BHP is safeguarded
