Broome Senior High School (SHS) is seeking two (2) enthusiastic and hardworking Aboriginal Support Coordinators to join their friendly team.

We currently have the following positions available:

Two (2) x permanent full-time positions, commencing Term 2, 2021.

The priorities of this position involve increasing school attendance and engagement of students. The successful applicants will strive to reduce recurring incidents of behaviour reports and suspensions, as well as advance academic and personal achievements. The successful applicants will aim to improve year 12 graduation rates and facilitate post-school transitions.

The successful applicants will have a sound knowledge of the issues and needs of Aboriginal children, families and communities and will be able to support Broome SHS in implementing the Department of Education's strategic plan for Aboriginal education. They will be well organised, have highly developed conceptual and analytical skills as well as the ability to develop effective working relationships within and external to the Department, including Aboriginal families and communities. They will be integral in supporting the work of Broome SHS by providing Aboriginal perspective to help strengthen cultural responsiveness and improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students.

Broome SHS, winner of the WA School of the Year for 2012, is now one of the premier high schools in the state. A leading Independent Public School in its own right, the school is also proudly part of the Broome Cluster of Independent Public Schools working in close collaboration with the town’s four primaries, Broome, Cable Beach, Broome North and Roebuck Primary Schools. The Cluster arrangement is an exciting initiative and as such Broome SHS is an active partner in the development of Cluster strategies.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge of issues and needs of Aboriginal children, families and communities and experience in applying that knowledge to the education sector.
  • Well developed organisational, planning and program management skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Well developed conceptual and analytical skills and ability to identify and clarify trends and issues and provide innovative solutions to address them.
  • Well developed facilitation, negotiation and consultation skills with a proven ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships within, and external to the Department, including Aboriginal families and communities.
  • Well developed written communication skills, including experience in preparing reports and general correspondence.

  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
