About the role

The Legal Counsel is accountable for the provision of legal advice and services to the VMCH Executive and Management team. This role will take ownership of the employment law portfolio as well as provide accurate, effective and efficient advice on in-house legal matters including commercial law, complaints, privacy, and property matters in the industry sectors in which VMCH operates. Additionally, you will be responsible for drafting agreements, addressing compliance issues and participating in negotiation discussions including contracts and tender processes.

  • Provide advice on the legislative framework including statutory compliance and regulatory issues and legal risk management
  • Ensure compliance in all corporate governance matters
  • Provide legal support in contractual disputes, including the management of external lawyers
  • Provide education, training and development to VMCH in relation relevant legal issues and frameworks affecting the organisation
  • Undertake enquiries and investigations, assessing and determining resolution options to obtain efficient and effective outcomes

Candidates should feel comfortable working with other in-house and outside counsels on a variety of legal matters. This position is part time, 3 days per week for a fixed term maternity leave contract.

Skills & experience

  • A Bachelor of Laws with admission to the legal profession as an Australian Lawyer, evidenced by a current practising certificate
  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice in a full range legal matters including corporate, commercial and property law
  • Ability to seek practical legal solutions that make business sense and produce concise legal advice
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the not-for-profit, community services, disability services and/or aged care sector
  • High level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work well within a team environment and independently
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships to support the growth of the organisation

Experience working in the not-for-profit, community services, disability services and/or aged care sector will be considered advantageous.
