The Project

The M80 Ring Road Upgrade is a $331 million investment to upgrade the 4-kilometre section between Sydney Road and Edgars Road.

The upgrade includes the widening and realignment of ramps, the construction of additional lanes, structural works, installation of a smart freeway management system, street lighting, traffic barriers, noise walls and landscaping.

When complete, the M80 Ring Road upgrade will provide more reliable connections to major freeways and interstate links including the Hume Highway, future North East Link, Princes and West Gate Freeways and the future West Gate Tunnel.

Construction is well underway, and the project is due for completion by early 2023. The project is proving to be an exciting opportunity for a sustainability professional who is looking for a project where sustainability is led from the top down!

Your opportunity

Being an integral part of the M80 upgrade project, the Senior Sustainability Advisor will pro-actively develop, implement and support the delivery of sustainability initiatives and requirements for the project. You will represent sustainability for the project senior leadership, managing both risk and opportunity for the project.

You will join an established team in a role that role has become available due to internal staff movement.

Your Role Will Include

  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to achieve and continually improve sustainability outcomes in construction and operation;
  • Reporting on sustainability performance, including tracking metrics against the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating tool;
  • Working in collaboration with the design, procurement, community and stakeholder, workforce development and training and construction teams and disciplines to embed sustainability into project delivery and future lessons learnt;
  • Assisting with the undertaking of technical sustainability assessments to inform key design and procurement decisions – energy and carbon analysis, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and water balance analysis;
  • Undertaking sustainability audits and waste audits as a suitably qualified professional as per the requirements of the IS Rating scheme;
  • Help to achieve key sustainability outcomes and targets against project KPIs;
  • Help to undertake investigations into alternatives and innovations to drive sustainability outcomes on projects, including opportunities to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and the supply chain;
  • Develop content and deliver inductions and training programs for all personnel involved in tenders and projects and take a proactive approach to advising and inspiring teams on sustainability deliverables;
  • Undertake sustainability workshops with project teams and subcontractors to identify sustainability opportunities.


Skills And Experience
  • At least 5 years sustainability experience, with previous experience in the provision of sustainability advice on the design and construction of major infrastructure projects;
  • Relevant degree in sustainability, engineering, environmental science or other relevant discipline;
  • Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) required, including experience in preparing and achieving at least one design or as built IS rating for a major infrastructure project.

    You are best described as a someone who leads from the front with an ability to build and maintain business relationships through collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders. High level communication skills including excellent technical writing skills and the ability to communicate to diverse audiences from senior leadership teams to construction workers are essential. You can effectively develop sustainability strategies and translate them into excellent on the ground outcomes which align with other technical requirements. This role is suited to someone who enjoys the challenge given by project leads by to implement new and innovate ways of working.
