We are currently seeking an experienced Underground Operations Manager to join the Site Leadership team at our Leonora Operations in Western Australia.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead the Gwalia underground operations team to safely and effectively mine the resource. You will assume responsibility for the development of fit for purpose designs that maximise extraction through efficient short term planning to ensure the development meters and ore production budgets are achieved.

This opportunity is a permanent, FIFO role on a balanced 8 days on, 6 days off, roster cycle, flying on company time to and from Perth. You also have the option to DIDO from Kalgoorlie.

The Opportunity

  • Lead safe work practices by ensuring safe work conditions and practices in the Department. Proactively investigating all safety and health concerns and implementing our “Building Brilliance” safety initiatives.
  • Direct the underground operations’ mining team and related contractors to execute works in line with contractual obligations to reach agreed business plans.
  • Ensure the underground production operations comply with internal and external policies and legislation. Ensure that the required statutory appointments are made, updated and the associated obligations are understood and enacted.
  • Manage and direct the underground operations team to produce the plans and designs in line with the monthly schedule to deliver to plan.
  • Manage and direct the underground operations in cooperation with the Mining Contractor(s) to align with the delivery of tonnes and ounces against budget.
  • Manage the costs associated with the Contractor for the underground operations and the underground operations department.
  • Manage the business improvement governance for the operations to achieve site targets as set out in the 3 year strategy and business plan.
  • Develop and deliver our “Building Brilliance” initiatives in line with the Leonora Business Improvement Program.
  • Evaluate the performance of contractors as it relates to underground operations including tracking trends to ensure actions are taken to correct variances and deliver results.
  • Evaluate the Mining Contractor’s production expenditure and consumption including support consumables, explosives, cement products etc.
  • Ensure control and delivery of capital expenditure and project scope in line with the St Barbara Capital Approval Process.
  • Provide advice on strategy, budget costs, mine development, key infrastructure and production.
  • Report on all key KPI’s and advancement to mine schedule as well as costs associated with departments.

What we will expect from you

  • You should feel a strong alignment with St Barbara’s values as you will be required to live them.
  • You are able to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 12 months) for site access purposes.
  • You have a current unencumbered ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence.
  • First Class WA Mine Managers Certificate.
  • A degree qualification in mining engineering or equivalent experience in mining operations.
  • At least ten (10) years relevant experience in mining, with appropriate experience in underground mining.
  • Thorough understanding of statutory reporting requirements.
  • Strong leadership skills including developing direct reports.
  • Financial analytical skills and commercial acumen.
  • High energy with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
