  • Opportunity for an experienced Conservator with specialist skills in object conservation

  • 2 x Temporary Full-time roles until Oct 2021 located in Ultimo 

  • Salary between $84,635 - $100,056 + superannuation + leave loading 

About us 

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. Established in 1879, the museum includes the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Observatory and the Museums Discovery Centre. The Museum is custodian to over half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia. 

The Powerhouse Program is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in the country. The Program will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW. The Program includes four key projects; the establishment of the Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta, the expansion of the Powerhouse collection facilities in Castle Hill, the establishment of the Powerhouse Creative Industries Precinct in Ultimo and the Relocation and Digitisation of over 300,000 objects from the Powerhouse collections.

The opportunity 

As a Senior Objects Conservator, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating and scheduling the conservation treatments for the exhibition program and be part of the installation team.

Day to day, you will:

  • Plan, coordinate, document, treat and prepare objects for exhibitions 

  • Ensure objects are fully supported and displayed according to appropriate standards 

  • Collaborate with peers in the exhibition team to ensure the overall success of the exhibition program

The successful candidate 

 To be successful in this role you will have;

  • Demonstrated and extensive experience in performing conservation treatments of and hands on experience in exhibition installs and dismantles 

  • As you will be part of a team of conservators working on the exhibition program, excellent communication, collaboration and planning skills will be essential to ensuring your success. 

  • Knowledge of national and international frameworks, ethics and issues relevant to heritage collections.

  • A strong understanding of the chemicals and materials that may be used for conservation treatments; and relevant WHS issues.

  • Tertiary qualification in Conservation or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years conservation experience in one or more subject specialisation areas. 

  • Physical requirements: This role requires the physical capability to stand for long periods of time, fine motor skills and manual dexterity to safely handle collection objects.
