The Victorian Government is working to reform the mental health system. It has established a Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System and has commitment to implementing all of its recommendations. As part its commitment to address workforce shortages, the Victorian Government, through Mental Health Reform Victoria invited health services to apply for graduate mental health nurse positions in 2021.

Barwon Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS) was successful in gaining a full time Psychiatric Nurse Educator position to support the learning pathway for graduate nurses transitioning into clinical rotations in community and specialist services within Barwon Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS).

About the facility 

MHDAS provides integrated and recovery oriented mental health, drugs and alcohol assessment, treatment and community support to people of all ages within the Barwon region experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, mental health and drug & alcohol issues, and their families.

Our service is internationally recognised for its innovative clinical programs and integrated models of practice that are client centred, accessible and family inclusive. We are fortunate to enjoy terrific internal relationships and have developed excellent partnerships with the local community that provide for seamless integrated care for our clients.

MHDAS is entering a new phase of co-design of our service system with people who access our services and our wider community. This will build on our nationally recognized unique cultural approach to the challenges of recovery oriented service delivery to redesign our service system.

About the role 

The Psychiatric Nurse Educator will aim to provide positive work experiences that encourage graduate nurses to pursue a career in mental health, specifically while on rotation at MHDAS Community team and Specialist services rotations.

Overall the aim is to increase the pipeline of qualified mental health staff, by providing an effective way for emerging practitioners to consolidate their knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities include;

  • Ensuring the graduate positions have the appropriate supervision to support professional development

  • Working collaboratively with the graduate Coordinator and the Graduate support team

  • Supporting additional learning programs such as the Undergraduate nursing program, Transition to Mental Health Nursing Program and the Post Graduate Nursing program.
