NINE - North Sydney, NSW

IT

JOB DESCRIPTION

Nine’s strategy is to create great content, distribute it broadly, and engage audiences and advertisers. As the home of Australia’s most trusted and loved brands spanning News, Sport, Lifestyle and Entertainment, we pride ourselves on creating the best content, accessed by consumers when and how they want, while celebrating our ability to give the shared experiences to audiences, the ones that connect us together. Living at the intersection of Australia’s best content, conversation and culture, Nine is where Australia connects. Our business operates in the following four divisions: Stuff; Publishing (including Metro Mastheads and Nine Digital); Stan; and Television. Nine’s assets include the Nine Network, major mastheads such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review, digital properties such as nine.com.au, 9Honey, Pedestrian.TV and CarAdvice, subscription video on demand platform Stan, and majority investments in Domain and Macquarie Media. Our broader investments also include interests in Future Women and 9Now.

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald are looking for a front-end or full-stack web developer, skilled in cutting-edge web technologies and keen to use them to help tell stories that matter.

This is a chance to join an award-winning team of designers and coders embedded in one of Australia's dynamic and influential news organisations. As a member of the Presentation team, you'll build data-visualisations, experimental storytelling formats and new and exciting tools for gathering and presenting news.

The role offers variety and challenge, working within a supportive environment with an emphasis on learning and experimentation. The team needs someone who is proficient with modern web technologies and interested in news. There is real potential to define this role in line with your passions, interests and skills.

The position can be based either in Melbourne or Sydney.

  • Experience or enthusiastic interest in working in a newsroom, helping Australia's best-read journalists cover stories of national importance through cutting-edge technology and design.
  • Experience or enthusiastic interest in working in a multidisciplinary team, alongside designers, artists, editors and writers, to produce award-winning storytelling.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in front-end or full-stack web development. (Candidates with less experience but proven potential and iterest are encouraged to apply.)
  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of web development, including HTML, vanilla JavaScript, CSS and its various alternatives.
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one modern JavaScript framework (React, Vue, Svelte, etc.).
  • A solid grasp of software engineering best practices, including Git version control.

Those are the essentials, but there are a huge number of ways this role could be shaped to fit the right candidate. If you're experienced or interested in one or more of the following, we want to hear about it:

  • Data visualisation, including libraries like D3.js and ggplot2.
  • Design, either as a trained professional or interested amateur.
  • Data journalism and related practices and tools, including web scrapers, R, the 'tidyverse', Python, spreadsheets and statistical methods.
  • New web technologies like WebGL, WebXR and related tools, like Three.js, A-Frame and PIXI.js.
  • Mapping and GIS tools, including ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet and Mapbox.
  • Open-source investigative journalism and related tools and methods, including geolocation, chronolocation and media-source verification.
  • Back-end web development, including the development of micro-services supporting user-facing applications.

We are excited to welcome a new member to the team and keen to hear from you. If you are concerned you might not meet the requirements outlined above, but think you can convince us you are the right person for the job, please do so.

Candidates of all backgrounds and religions, genders and sexualities are encouraged to apply.

Please apply ASAP as we are actively interviewing for the position.
