POSITION CONTEXT
Position
Summary/Purpose
To assist in maintaining safe and enjoyable recreational and leisure facilities within Roper Gulf Regional
Council’s parks, reserves, sports grounds, CBD’s and the urban landscape
To operate and maintain Roper Gulf Regional Council’s plant in a professional and safe manner
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Delivery
Be responsible for the promotion of positive and courteous dealing with all Council staff, public and stakeholders
Carry out duties in accordance with relevant legislation and management plans for the areas maintained
Observe and implement as appropriate all Council policies and procedures including the Code of Conduct, Equal Employment
Opportunity and Occupational Health & Safety principles
Exhibit an excellent attendance record, including punctuality and be able to work unsupervised, remain self-motivated and
productive (efficient / effective) in accordance with Council’s priorities
Assist in planning resources, tools, equipment and machinery needed for a task
Ability to spray / spread pesticides, herbicides, fertiliser, fungicides and other chemical safely
General Works
Assist with maintenance and construction operations within Council reserves; such as grass mowing, playground maintenance,
sports ground maintenance, tree, shrub and garden planting & maintenance, including manual work and machinery operation
Assist in inspecting structures and amenities and report any damage to the Outstations Coordinator promptly.
Assist with construction projects and major maintenance works as instructed.
Assist with maintaining presentation of open spaces, verges, drains etc. and keeping week growth to a minimum
Report daily to the Outstations Coordinator for instruction and inform of any operational matters.
Outstations / Common Areas / Essential Services
Assist in identifying weeds and pests and use appropriate methods of control; i.e. through mechanical means or use of chemical
control measures.
Ensure cultivated plants and lawns are fertilised and groomed to maintain acceptable presentation.
Assist with identifying reticulation problems with lawns and gardens and promptly report them to the Outstations Coordinator.
Repair minor reticulation faults.
Waste Management
- Assist in routine clean-up of Council facilities and infrastructure.
- Assist in routine household waste collection
- Collect all litter and hazardous material and dispose of in an appropriate manner
- Assist in dump maintenance
Operation & Maintenance of Plant and Equipment
- Operate Council vehicles and plant as authorised in Council’s day to day operations in a safe and efficient manner
- Ensure all loads carried by vehicles are secure and covered to prevent item / materials dislodging
- Drive and operate vehicles in a safe, efficient and effective manner at all times ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers
- Ensure that cabin and body of the vehicle is maintained in a clean and tidy condition
Vehicle Administration
- Ensure all necessary paper work is completed correctly and promptly
- Conduct daily inspections of the vehicle
- Ensure that the mechanical workshop is notified of any damage / defect to the vehicle immediately
Operation & Maintenance of Equipment
- Operate ride-on mowers, push mowers, whipper snippers, brush cutters, power brooms, petrol driven chainsaws and associated
equipment and vehicles

- Ability to use small hand tools and simple work appliances common to the horticultural industry
- Knowledge of basic maintenance and cleaning of work equipment and the work area
Administration
- As necessary, complete occurrence reports (for accidents / incidents) and hazard reports in a timely manner in accordance with
Council’s determinations, business rules, procedures and practices
- Complete and submit time and attendance records, leave and higher duty applications to the Human Resources department in
accordance with Council’s business rules, procedures and practices, within specified timeframes for each pay period
Physical Requirements
Fitness level and agility to operate the following plant and equipment as required for the position:
Whipper Snippers
Push Mowers
Ride-on Mowers
Lawn Edger
Leaf Blower
Hand tools; including but not limited to shove, garden fork, mattock, rake and similar
Occupational Health & Safety
- Take reasonable care of his or her own health and safety

- Cooperate with his or her employer with respect to any action taken by the employer to comply with any requirement imposed by
or under the Act or Regulation
- Report all accidents, incidents and hazardous situations arising in the course of work
4. SELECTION CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL
Certificate III and/or equivalent licence and certificate(s) relevant to the role; or competencies acquired on the job.
Ability to deal with or solve daily work issues by reviewing the options available and applying established practices and
procedures or making recommendations to supervisor.
Ability to make decisions guided by practices, procedures and precedent or if required in consultation with a senior team
member.
Ability to plan daily activities to achieve predetermined goals, targets, outcomes and objectives set for the role.
Good organisation skills to communicate with other team members and staff to achieve project components required.
Sound oral communication and public relations skills with the ability to respond to moderately complex enquiries that requires
detailed and careful explanation.
Good written communication skills with the ability to complete standard correspondence following prescribed formats.
Experience with the use and maintenance of various types of plant and equipment and work with minimal supervision.
Ability to maintain a level of health and fitness to carry out physical requirements of the role
Current Northern Territory “C” Class Drivers Licence
Be an Australian Resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia (Please note that RGRC do not currently
undertake sponsorship).
Undertake a new Criminal History Check prior to commencement of employment and renew your Criminal History Check every
three (3) years, or as per the Criminal History Check Policy.
Working with Children Clearance (OCHRE Card) required at the commencement of employment or a current receipt of an
application for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT
Able to meet the inherent requirements of the position both physically and mentally.
DESIRABLE
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a related role and/or employment or mentoring services
