UnitingCare's Family & Disability Services is seeking a holistic Family Counsellor to join their Family Intervention Service (FIS) in Cairns on a Maximum Term Full Time basis to 30th June 2021. 

FIS is a non-government home based therapeutic intervention service. FIS seeks to protect children by strengthening families’ ability to meet the needs of their children. The service is offered to families referred only by the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women where children are at risk of out of home care or to achieve reunification. 

The Role:

This position provides case management and counselling with families in their homes at least once to several times per week. The Family Counsellor will engage with families to develop goals to address the Child Protection Worries and to help achieve these goals. The aim of FIS includes (but are not limited to) addressing:

  • A safe place to live (home, clothing, hygiene etc.);
  • Regularity in daily life (routines);
  • Physical and psychological safety;
  • Parenting education;
  • Establishing social/community support networks;
  • Practical and emotional support;
  • Advocacy.

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (Bachelor Degree minimum) in human services field
  • Demonstrated experience and sound knowledge in working with children and families and/or child protection field.
  • Current Blue Card (Working with Children) or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
  • Current QLD drivers licence
