Purser

Coral Expeditions is Australia’s pioneering expedition cruise company. We operate and manage a fleet of small expedition ships taking guests to some of the most beautiful, yet undiscovered, regions of Australia, Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Islands. The role of Purser is a key on-board management position responsible for on board crew management and guest satisfaction by managing accounting and administration, accommodation services, bar and dining room procedures, galley operations, laundry formalities, on board merchandise and generally planning and providing for all possible needs and wants of guests from embarkation until disembarkation.

Responsibilities include

The Purser is a senior onboard management position answering directly to the Master on board and the Hospitality Operations Executive and Hospitality Operations Manager ashore.

Directly supervises Chefs; Assistant Purser; Senior Cruise Attendants; Cruise Attendants.

The Purser is responsible for

Accommodation Services/Laundry Formalities
Ensure all guest accommodation and areas is of the highest standards and monitor same with formal room checks.
Maintain a cleaning schedule for interior of vessel.
Ensure the care of guest and company laundry is applied.
Ensure any defects are logged for rectification both by crew and /or contractors.

Accounting and Administration
Uphold and complete all trip documentation including reports, handovers and correspondence between the office and ship.
Uphold and settle final payments of guest and crew accounts.
Uphold and complete petty cash, foreign currency and banking procedures.

Catering and Chefs
Communicate daily to ensure all dietary and allergy requirements are catered for.
Approve each day’s menu.
Oversee galley operation: cleanliness, food preparation quality and time management.
Monitor the performance of the galley, specifically victualling, food preparation and presentation, waste and cleanliness.

Crew
Supervision of all hospitality crew.
Training of new crew members and continued ongoing training and development.
Monitor and encourage the highest standards of behaviour, sae work practices, appearance and self-discipline, appropriate to company policies.
Maintain effective communication with all crew members.
Planning, assigning and directing work.
Appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining appropriate to company policies.
Addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Working as part of a team and encouraging a high performing team/crew in the provision of the overall cruise and expedition experience.
Fostering positive links between crew and Coral Expeditions Administration and Management.

Bar and Dining Room Procedures
Operate, maintain and actively promote Bar and Cocktail sales.
Ensure the appropriate organisation and operation of the Dining Room for all meals, including maintenance of equipment and stock levels.

Guest Services
Conduct guest Safety Briefing for all at the commencement of each trip.
Person in charge of the guest muster station.
Responsible for guest safety, muster ad abandon ship procedures in the event of an onboard emergency.
Liaise with Master, regarding weather conditions, destinations, anchoring and departure times and meal times.
Liaise with Expedition Leader regarding, destinations, excursion times, on board activities and meal times.
Assist with Safety Manifest procedures where needed.
Professionally represent the company for visiting Agents, Wholesalers and Famil groups, including FOC/VIP, site inspections and on-board functions.

Orders and EOM Stocktake
Maintain controlled par levels.
Maintain an effective stock rotation program.
Conduct and complete trip orders of the Bar, Shop, Linen and General Stores.
Accounting for Bar and Shop stock, completing accurate and timely Bar and Shop stocktakes.

Turnaround Procedures
Ensure the efficient and effective readying of the interior in each port, in preparation for guest arrival, taking a lead role to ensure that each turnaround is effective.
Prepared turnaround duties for hospitality crew are completed.
Ensure all provisions are on board in advance of departure (as per delivery schedule).
Completion of previous trip documents prior to departure.
Ensue the readiness of next trip documents including setting crew rosters and delegate responsibilities.
Required to inspect all areas of the interior prior to guests embarking to verify the vessels interior preparation is complete.
Ensure the vessel is ready for scheduled boarding times.
Hospitality Operations Manager notification report sent, to advise readiness to sail.
Scheduled Maintenance and Refit.

  • Conduct a running work list of maintenance, which requires attention for the refit maintenance periods.
  • Rostered/working maintenance periods require hands on work and monitoring work to be completed.
  • Attend, adhere and contribute to information communicated at morning tool box meetings.
  • Prepare vessel for upcoming maintenance / refit. From but not limited to furniture, wall and equipment protection.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures, includes completing safety inductions prior to using any tools.
  • Performs work accordingly to established worklist. General maintenance from but not limited to detailed cleaning, sanding, varnishing and painting.
  • Checks interior of vessel at beginning and end of shifts.
  • Record and report damage.
  • Reports work accomplished orally to Master and written on established worklist.

Have proven hospitality Management experience.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent personal presentation.
High level of customer service.
Demonstrated safe working practices mindset.
Tolerance of others to work and live in a small environment for long periods of time.

Qualifications Required

AMSA Endorsed Certificate of Safety Training (CoST).
Certificate 2 in hospitality operations preferred.
Crowd & Crisis Management.
AMSA Medical.
MSIC Card.
First Aid & CPR.
Responsible Service of Alcohol.
Passport.
Australian Seafarers book or other country equivalent discharge book.
