About your opportunity
Covering an area of approximately 300,000 square kilometres and servicing many of the remote communities within North-Western Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria, the North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) is responsible for the health promotion and wellbeing of people within the service area and ensuring that effective, high quality services are accessible to all.
The North West Hospital Maternity Unit is the referral centre for all pregnant women in the district and for a small Northern Territory community. The Maternity Unit provides care to women and their families within its Antenatal service, Antenatal/Postnatal Inpatient Unit, Birthing Unit, Special Care Nursery and Home Visiting program. The Unit is eight beds, with a three bed Birthing Suite and a three cot Special Care Nursery. The Nursery has CPAP and ventilator capabilities, undertaking short term respiratory support for newborns or stabilisation before transfer to a Tertiary facility for ongoing management. The Unit has approximately 500 births per year. The Health Worker reports to the Midwifery Unit Manager
This role:
Act as a resource person for the health team and women to promote culturally safe and appropriate care.
Liaise with members of the community to assist women to attend their clinic appointments
Follow up with women in the community when they fail to attend antenatal/postnatal appointments
Requirements:
- Possession of a Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or equivalent.
- Whilst not essential, experience working with mums and bubs is highly regarded.
- Class C Motor Vehicle Licence endorsement is required.
- Potential applicants are advised that the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 requires Queensland Health to seek a ‘working with children check; from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian prior to appointment to this position.
- This is a Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) risk role.
- Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.

Generous remuneration package comprising:
- Salary range between $2209.30 to $2307.9 p.f. (OO3)
- Annual recreational leave p.a. with 17.5% loading
