Curator – Ocean Science and Technology

Reporting to the Head of Knowledge you will provide expert advice in the area of historic and contemporary maritime art. You will collaborate with several other curators and takes a prominent role in the museum’s Acquisitions Committee and in leading funding and high-level donation opportunities in their area of expertise.

A key focus of this position in the short-medium term will be the conception and oversight of a ten-year program of collaborative events and exhibitions in support of the UNESCO Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development together with the following:


  • Developing the collections and collecting areas of maritime art and master narrative theme – confronting the sea
  • Developing immersive programs, by engaging audiences with digital and online content including exhibitions and other new media opportunities and public programs.
  • Research and curate compelling digital content for online exhibitions and other digital/social media activities (incl images, audio, video and text) and ensure that the content complies with copyright requirements
  • Advise and develop contemporary art collection and programming across thematic areas in consultation with curatorial and exhibitions and design teams and ensure best-practice standards are achieved in managing collections related to art and social history
  • Provide administrative and project delivery support enabling the Program/Exhibitions, including writing and issuing artist contracts, preparing and managing project budgets, arranging artist travel and schedules, scheduling installation and deinstallation, engaging and managing external contractors
  • Contribute to the writing of fundraising, acquisition and exhibition proposals, planning the presentation of and installing artwork and objects
  • Work collaboratively with all business units and key stakeholders to ensure the Museum’s products, services, exhibitions, collections, events and commercial activities are being shared and promoted through inspiring and engaging content on site and online
  • Provide professional advice, internally and externally, on projects related to ocean science and technology and other collecting areas

Ideal candidate will have:


  • Knowledge of digital and new media: best practices, industry standards and how to reach and engage new audiences and skills in storytelling and directing the curation of unique and engaging digital experiences both online and in-museum.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the research, interpretation and documentation of historic craft, and the ability to develop relevant interpretive programs
  • Understanding of current web platforms (such as Content Management Systems) and digital technologies to further develop the collection through content development, web editing, information architecture and compatibility issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising with communities and managers of relevant Museum collections.
  • Proven experience meeting project deadlines, working within budget constraints and working across multiple diverse projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of and experience with Collection Development policies and PCOL loans and acquisitions policies and procedures and ability to provide curatorial input into periodic reviews of the Collection Development Policy.
  • Demonstrated ability using collection database systems such as TMS.
  • Public engagement skills and experience in media, conferences, presentations and digital outreach
