Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) is Victoria's safety regulator responsible for electricity, gas and pipeline safety. Our role is to ensure that Victorian gas and electricity industries are safe and meet community expectations. We are also responsible for licensing and registering electricians, and educating the community about energy safety. Our people come from a wide range of professions with diverse skills and experience driving the success of ESV.

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Communications & Marketing (CAMS), the Senior Media Adviser will be responsible for developing and implementing communications and issues management strategies to support ESV's objectives, along with preparing and responding to media enquiries on behalf of the organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop strategies to expand ESV's presence in the Victorian and national media to ensure ESV's position and key messages are reflected in media coverage.
  • Manage the development of communication strategies and plans on key issues and programs
  • Brief the Commission, ESV executive and external agencies including the Minister's Office on potential media issues.
  • Develop communications for a variety of different channels and purposes, including ESV publications, speeches and external industry publications.
  • Organise media conferences and public events as required.
  • Provide advice to ESV business areas, senior management, executive and the Commission on strategic media opportunities
  • Develop and implement ESV's media policies and procedures.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in journalism, public relations, communications or a similar discipline.
  • Significant experience in a similar communications, media, public relations position, applying highly developed communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and manage various media issues that could impact on organisational reputation or achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders such as, ESV senior managers and Ministerial Advisers.
  • Understanding and desire to promote energy safety stories through various channels including social media.
  • Ability to prepare, edit and proof-read various forms of written communications including writing news releases, speeches and publications.
  • An eagerness to learn about Victoria's energy safety framework and regulation
