About The Team

The Technology and National Security Division advises on the impacts of technology and how the digital economy will drive jobs and growth. We develop and implement policies and programs on emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain and quantum and support the digitisation of Australian businesses and the adoption of technology across the economy. As part of Australian Government’s $800m Digital Business Plan, we deliver a number of initiatives to enable businesses to take advantage of digital technologies to grow their businesses and create jobs as part of our economic recovery plan. We are also responsible for growing the Australian technology sector, cyber security and critical technologies policy and industry growth, national security engagement, and Australia’s international engagement on digital economy and technology issues.

We are looking for policy officers for vacancies across the division including in our cyber and critical technologies teams and would highly value candidates with an understanding or background in these fields.

The division is based in Sydney and Canberra, roles will only be considered in these locations. Some roles can only be filled in our Canberra location.

At the Executive Level 1, in addition to these criteria, you must:
  • have a demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and manage the performance of diverse teams.

You do not need to be a technical expert in specific technologies. Experience in, or an understanding of cyber security and critical technology policy, or the digital economy and the technology sector would be an advantage.

What You Will Do

As an APS Level 5/6 policy officer you will contribute to the work of the division and support your Manager to deliver the team’s work program and deliver high-quality policy outcomes. Activities may include:
  • Applying innovative and creative thinking skills to challenge conventional views, and facilitating the development of strategic, innovative, and evidence based policy.
  • Undertaking research and analysis into complex relevant policy issues and providing support and guidance to junior staff in these tasks.
  • Providing regular ministerial and senior executive briefing (both oral and written).
  • Managing key stakeholder relationships, including members of the technology sector, various peak bodies and industry associations, state and territory governments and other Commonwealth departments and agencies.
  • Representing the department in external forums and working groups.

At the Executive Level 1, in addition to these criteria, you will:
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, coaching and performance management to a diverse team.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a minimum of a Baseline security clearance, with some roles requiring a higher clearance level up to a NV2. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at the required level.

Notes

This recruitment process will be used to fill both ongoing roles and expected non-ongoing vacancies.

If you are an ongoing APS employee, we can offer a temporary transfer at level, or a temporary movement at a higher classification.

We can also offer non-ongoing employment for a 6 month period if you are not already employed in the APS (on a permanent basis).
