Geoscience Modelling Specialist

Anglo American - Brisbane Grove, NSW

Mining, Oil & Gas
Source: uWorkin

Here at Anglo American we are continuing to embark on our journey, implementing a world class operating model to deliver our organisation’s burning ambition to be the most valued mining company. Our transformation is focused on executing Anglo American’s Operating Model (AAOM).

Understanding the geological setting of Met Coal’s operations is key to delivering an integrated Geoscience solution that encompasses exploration, geological modelling and operational geology. This function will provide the expertise and specialist knowledge to drive change, process efficiency and optimisation, and continuous improvement in order to transform our business.

We currently have three defined mining complexes which operate in the Northern, Central and Southern regions of the Bowen Basin which encompass our 2 OpenCuts (Dawson/Capcoal) and 4 Underground longwall (Moranbah North, Grosvenor, Grasstree and Aquila) operations currently producing up to 25Mtpa of predominately metallurgical coal for export. Anglo American also holds a number of highly prospective coal tenures and projects throughout the Bowen Basin which are managed within the relevant complex.

Job Description

The Geoscience Modelling Specialist is responsible for the generation and maintenance of the geoscientific models (or models) for the complex, with level of detail commensurate with time period of use.

In this role you will create a spatial representation of key geoscientific parameters that reflect the resource to inform business decisions at appropriate scale and resolution. You will also be responsible for:

  • Development of flexible geoscience modelling process and systems for the delivery of fit for purpose spatial models into business and operational planning.
  • Collation and integration of exploration and operational datasets to accurately characterise key geoscientific parameters and features for input into geoscientific models.
  • Incorporation of exploration and operational data /observations into spatial geoscientific models to deliver required level of detail for short, medium and long-term development of the resource.
  • Be accountable for the geological evaluation and delivery of geoscientific models both within the immediate vicinity of the operation and within the complex.
  • Conduct geological evaluations of coal deposits, including the identification of potential geoscientific hazards, risk and opportunities for the operation and communicate to key stakeholders.
  • Generate models and resource estimates for annual statutory reporting for entities within complex.
  • Assist in both spatial and temporal geological and model reconciliations to monitor model accuracy and communicate to key stake holders.
  • Document geoscientific modelling process, including triggers and actions, to deliver models to quality and timeframes required.
  • Identify most effective modelling strategies that meet Safety, Health and Environment targets, evaluate performance losses & distributions for service strategies.

  • Expert level skill in modelling of geological, geotechnical and coal quality data for use in resource estimation and operational planning and control
  • Experience in cross value chain geological and model reconciliation processes and triggers for determining model update requirements
  • Experience in the development and application of innovative and flexible solutions to the discipline value chain to enable productive and safe work and achieve plans
