Naval Group Australia (NGA) is seeking 20 Design Trainees to join the Attack Class Submarine program, the largest and most ambitious defence acquisition program Australia has ever undertaken. Professional challenges don’t come any bigger than this.

This opportunity is a great entry pathway for individuals who are looking to start their career or those simply looking to change direction. The Detailed Design Trainees will complete a ‘Diploma of Engineering (Technical)’. This will involve approximately 50% theoretical training at TAFE SA and 50% On the Job Training (OJT) with host employers.

Over the course of the traineeship, Trainees will gain experience in:

  • Engineering design concepts
  • Applying mathematics to engineering design
  • Mechanical engineering principles
  • Ship design principles including submarine specific knowledge
  • Selection and test of materials
  • Engineering drafting including 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Trainees who successfully complete the Diploma and a 3-month internal detailed design training course may be selected to move to France to do 18 months of on the job training with Naval Group France.

These roles are part of a feeder program where NGA is seeking to develop a workforce of Detailed Designers. The design element of the Future Submarine Program is critical to the overall development and construction of the Attack Class submarines and ensuring a sovereign Australian shipbuilding capability.

These roles will be based in Adelaide, South Australia but may require some travel including an 18-month period in France.

To be successful in this position, the role suits a candidate that is:

  • Minimum qualification completion of SACE or equivalent experience (Trade/Tafe certification)
  • Competencies in mathematics, physics, engineering studies or technical drawing (desirable)
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft office tool suite
  • Displays personal qualities such as commitment, initiative, personal drive and openness
  • Displays an aptitude for creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Ability to operate well in a team and to also work autonomously
  • Interested in working in a multicultural environment
  • Interested in working in the maritime environment
