About us

Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS) provides a range of medical and clinical services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Townsville and the surrounding region. Our health services are provided by a dedicated team of Doctors, Indigenous Health Professionals, Nurses, Visiting Specialists and Allied Health Professionals.


About the role

TAIHS has an opportunity for an experienced Practice Lead to join our Outreach Team in Charters Towers. In this varied position you will be providing guidance, advice and clinical leadership to the Indigenous Health Workers and Nursing staff, this includes coordinating professional development, monitoring clinical practice, in consultation with the clinical governance team and Director of Medical Services.

Each day will be distinct; however, your key everyday jobs will include:

  • Managing a team of nurses, clinical staff and at times clinical students and trainees
  • Ensuring clinical interventions are carried out in an effective and timely manner progress notes, reports and records are completed in required format
  • Complying with all legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements
  • Working collaboratively across a range of internal and external stakeholders to identify and implement initiatives to increase quality care and people management practices
  • Providing support, training, and ongoing mentoring with staff and hold weekly team meetings
  • Ability to be flexible, strong, and resilient in various challenging situations
  • Providing clinical weekly “in service” training to nurses and health workers
  • Promoting and contributing to a safe, secure environment for staff, clients, and visitors

About you

With your previous clinical experience, you will be able to lead and mentor a dedicated high performing team in working closely with the general practitioners to help improve Aboriginal Primary Healthcare.

With excellent interpersonal skills as part of your skillset, you are able to easily build rapport with people with diverse backgrounds and interests.

Your empathetic nature makes you approachable, and a good problem solver, who can think quickly on your feet to make sound decisions.

You have an understanding of the historical, social, cultural, and economic issues effecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Additionally, your effective communication skills, enables you to liaise comfortably with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

To be suitable for this position, your qualifications, experience & licenses for the role will consist of:

  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • QLD AHPRA Registration or ability to transfer
  • Advanced clinical evidence-based skills, knowledge, and experience of practice standards as well as evidence of continued professional development and upskilling.
  • Experience in working collaboratively across a range of internal and external stakeholders to identify and implement initiatives to increase quality care and people management practices
  • Experience in the use and practical application of medical software such as Medical Director and Pracsoft
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
  • Satisfactory Police Check – no Serious/Criminal/Court Record
