The La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food (LIAF) is to use and translate cutting-edge research to maintain and increase food production in a sustainable manner. LIAF’s goal is to find solutions that enable sustainable agriculture to provide food of the quality and quantity to meet future global food challenges. A further goal of LIAF is to support the development of the future workforce that is needed to underpin this rapidly changing sector. Foods will need to be developed and produced with inherent health traits; grown sustainably in ways that respond to increasingly challenging climatic environments; and supported by growers and supply chains that provide provenance and safety credentials.

About the role

For this position, you will be employed as a Level A academic for 2 years. You must have experience in imaging a variety of plant materials using electron microscopy (EM), particularly transmission (T) EM, and in the relevant sample preparation techniques. Experience with other microscopy and associated techniques, including cryo-sectioning, confocal and/or in-situ hybridization would be desirable. The appointee will be excellent at working collaboratively with a team of university and industry researchers and take responsibility and leadership for their work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver project milestones. You will develop and optimize new techniques and implement state-of-the-art approaches for the EM imaging of plant materials

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, the successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD degree in the biological, molecular, life sciences with substantial experience and expertise in EM and image analysis of plant materials;
  • Extensive expertise in and experience operating transmission and scanning electron microscopes for the imaging of plant materials;
  • Ability to understand a range of biological problems, provide expert advice and develop innovative methodologies or solutions to solve complex biological problems;
  • Demonstrated experience in a range of sample preparation techniques, including preparation of vitreous material and cryo-sectioning for cryo-EM, fixation, embedding and ultrathin sectioning of samples of plant origin.
