Towers is seeking a Surface Coatings Specialist, preferably with Defence experience to support a Research Team located in Melbourne. This role is an exisiting contract position currently approved to May 2023 with a possible 12 month extension.

Candidates must be an Australian Citizen and hold recognised qualifications appropriate to this role.

The objective of the successful applicant will be to deliver the following during their tenure:

  • Undertake high-quality research into the formulation, manufacture and application of novel coatings for Defence platforms. These coatings will be tested against standard coating specifications.
  • Formulation and application of Defence coatings using novel pigments and polymers having unique absorption and dissipation properties;
  • Formulation and application of Defence coatings in green, tan and black colours;
  • Testing of these novel coatings for unique properties and against coating specifications; and
  • Application of these coatings onto demonstrator vehicles.

Experience in the following areas is required:


  • Demonstrated experience in coatings technology especially in the formulation, application and testing of liquid applied, ambient-cure coatings;
  • A degree, honours degree or PhD qualification from an Australian Tertiary Institution (or equivalent) in the fields of Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or Formulation Science with relevant industrial experience;
  • Demonstrated a minimum of 2 years' experience in the formulation of industrial coatings; 
  • Proven experience in the fabrication of optical devices;
  • Experience with surface analysis techniques such as contact angle, XPS, FTIR/ATR, AFM, SEM/TEM;
  • Demonstrated ability to test surface coatings against coating specifications and by natural and accelerated weathering; and
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies.

Highly Desirable:

  • Demonstrable experience in the formulation of surface coatings containing inorganic pigments;
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct work with limited guidance and supervision; and
  • Possess excellent communication skills and show demonstrated ability use them to present scientific results both orally and written reports.


  •  Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research through the use of scientific databases/literature.

To be considered for these opportunities, you must have Australian Citizenship and be elegible for an Australian Government Security Clearance.

Previous Defence experience is Preferable.
