JOB DESCRIPTION

The National Rugby League Limited (NRL) is the world’s premier rugby league competition.

Based at Rugby League Central in Sydney, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a motivated lawyer to join our legal team. 

The Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advice and support to the NRL business across a range of commercial issues. This is a broad, commercial legal role that will suit a lawyer with the desire and ability to work with a diverse client base across multiple areas, including general commercial, litigation and intellectual property.

The Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support to the NRL business, including:


  • commercial contracting, including in relation to sponsorship, marketing, media, licensing and service arrangements;
  • legal advisory and support for various business units including NRL digital, commercial, football and community;
  • managing claims and litigation;
  • advising in respect of the game’s intellectual property rights, including assisting in the management of the game’s trade mark portfolio;
  • managing compliance with regulatory requirements; and
  • liaising with the business, stakeholders and external legal counsel to identify and manage legal risks impacting the business or the game.


This role will suit a lawyer with around5 years’ post-qualification experience, ideally you will have experience working in a leading private practice and knowledge of or experience of in-house practice. In addition, you will ideally have:


  • experience working with a diverse client base across a variety of different legal areas;
  • a positive “can do” attitude;
  • a demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders;
  • an ability to work autonomously and as part of a small in-house team; and
  • excellent attention to detail and strong time management skills.

An interest in Rugby League and/or experience in the sporting industry is also desirable but is not essential.
