The Role


We have a new and exciting opportunity for two Legal Counsel to join our growing organisation.


The Institute’s legal team currently comprises a small but dynamic team of lawyers, providing legal support to the Institute, as well as its commercial enterprises.


The Legal Counsel will be working within the Global function of The George Institute, based in the Sydney office. The Legal Counsel will be accountable for the provision of legal services and advice to the organisation globally, with a focus on contract review / drafting and compliance.


Duties and Key Responsibilities


  • Provide high quality advice on legal and regulatory issues of importance to the organisation globally
  • Draft, review, and assist with the negotiation of contracts and other legal documents for the organisation globally
  • Assist with the further development and implementation of the Institute’s data governance and privacy frameworks to ensure compliance with local and international requirements
  • Assist with the further developed and implementation of relevant compliance policies and procedures
  • Support the Legal Director with ad hoc projects and business as usual activities
  • Update, coordinate, and prepare legal templates for use across The George Institute Group
  • Manage (with other members of the team) the legal team’s matter management system(s), registers and related records
  • Monitor changes and developments in the legal and regulatory environment in which the organisation operates and provide recommendations to the Legal Director, COO, and other staff, as appropriate
  • Provide training on relevant legal topics and maintain excellent relationships with all business units of the organisation
  • Participate in team meetings and activities


Skills, Knowledge and Experience


Essential


  • Tertiary qualification(s) in law and admitted to practise as a solicitor in NSW, holding a current practising certificate with the Law Society of NSW
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience gained from a combination of private practice and in-house roles and demonstrated experience in general commercial law, privacy, IP, and employment law
  • Extensive experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, and general corporate matters
  • Skilled in matters relating to governance and risk management
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail, seeing the big picture and a strong focus on quality
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking with the ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous external global environments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously, in small teams, and with a wide range of varying stakeholders with a demonstrated ability to act with integrity in all matters

  • Experience within a medical research institute and or Not for Profit sector
