The Role

The Ministerial and Executive Support Team Director will lead a team of coordination and support staff, providing tactical and strategic level guidance to progress executive and ministerial priorities. The team are highly committed and working with Ministerial offices and senior Defence officials means the impact of their work is immediate and visible.

The Director will establish and maintain a strong network of internal and external stakeholder relationships. They will have frequent engagement with senior officers, Ministerial Advisers and Departmental Liaison Officers, and will be required to work additional hours at times due to the time critical nature of requests. The ability to recognise shared agendas and identify potential risks, negotiating and influencing to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes is essential. The Director will also need to approach the role with agility, flexibility and commitment to delivery.

As part of the Branch Leadership Team the director will champion reform and business improvement within the team and branch, demonstrating positive and professional behaviour at all times.

About our Team

The Ministerial and Executive Support Team provides support and administration duties for Secretary, Chief of the Defence Force, Associate Secretary and Vice Chief of the Defence Force (the ‘Top Four’), the four Defence Ministers and their staff and users of the Parliamentary Document Management System (PDMS). The team operates as three separate subteams:

  • The PDMS Support Team enable the Department’s ICT requirements through the management and oversight of PDMS Helpdesk support for Defence Protected Network (DPN) and Defence Secret Network (DSN). The team also provide support for Digital First.
  • The Executive Support Unit (ESU) is positioned as the conduit between the Department and the Top Four. The ESU’s primary role is to receive, process and quality control a range of executive and ministerial documents and correspondence from across the Department
  • The Ministerial Support Team provide portfolio-related support to the four Defence Ministers’ offices. The team provides this support in Canberra and at each location where the Ministers have a presence, including Electorate offices and Commonwealth Parliament Offices (CPO). The primary aim of our team is to strategically assist, manage and act as an enabler for the Ministers’ offices

The merit list from this recruitment round will be used for other ongoing and non-ongoing positions within the Branch.
