The Team Leader - Industrial Chemicals will lead a team of committed technical specialists to deliver influential assessments and advice. You will develop innovative new approaches to protect the environment from harmful chemicals and learn new skills while mentoring others to succeed.

Who we are
The Chemical Assessments Section supports the Chemicals Management Branch to protect people and the environment from harmful chemicals and pollutants. We support effective regulatory decision-making by providing quality, fit-for-purpose advice on chemicals and environmental contaminants. We provide environmental risk assessments on industrial chemicals to the government’s industrial chemicals regulator the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS). We provide expert advice on the environmental impacts of chemicals to stakeholders from across government. We participate in national and global networks that translate the best available science into effective advice on the assessment and safe use of chemicals. We develop new methods for prioritising chemicals for risk assessment. Our work requires a strong technical background combined with a good understanding of regulatory and policy frameworks for chemicals. We have a multi-disciplinary team of regulatory scientists with expertise in chemistry, ecotoxicology, environmental modelling, and risk assessment. We are committed to the effective application of science in regulatory decision making.

The Job
The position of Team Leader in the Chemical Assessments Section is a challenging and responsible role. A Team Leader will:
  • Assist in leading and managing the day-to-day work and long-term planning of a large section of 20 staff during a period of change.
  • Set and maintain high standards for the environmental risk assessment of industrial chemicals including peer reviewing completed assessments to ensure they are scientifically sound and consistent with government policy.
  • Build team capability and lead continuous improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of the section in providing quality, timely, and influential advice.
  • Work closely with colleagues and external stakeholders to deliver high quality assessments and advice within statutory timeframes.
  • Maintain and apply relevant expertise (e.g. in chemistry, ecotoxicology, or environmental modelling of chemicals) in the context of legislative and regulatory frameworks.

  • Ability to drive innovation and develop staff capability.
Knowledge and experience
Applications are sought from individuals who have strong technical skills in the risk assessment of chemicals and an understanding of national and global regulatory systems for chemicals. Experience in regulatory assessment of chemicals, managing teams working to statutory timeframes, and leading interactions with other government agencies is highly desirable.

This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
